East Grand “La Plaza”

This development is located on the east side of Des Moines. Utilizing new construction and renovation of existing buildings, this project encourages sustainable community development by offering development opportunities for retail, medical services, restaurants, and affordable apartments.

Development along East Grand “La Plaza” is progressing in three phases. Each phase has included the rehabilitation of an existing building and a new infill building:

Phase 1

• 1518 East Grand Avenue – renovations and expansion of Los Laureles Restaurant, an authentic Mexican restaurant
• 1534 East Grand Avenue – constructed in 2006, this new building offers four commercial bays.

Phase 2

• 1542 East Grand Avenue – built in 1885, this building was completely renovated in 2006. This mixed-use building offers commercial and residential space.
• 1514 East Grand Avenue – completed in 2008, this new building offers nearly 5,000 square feet of commercial space.

Phase 3

• 1552 East Grand Avenue – New building completed in 2009 serves as the east anchor of the development.  This building has 3 commercial bays.
• 1524 East Grand Avenue (La Tienda Mexicana) – Has undergone complete exterior and interior renovation.

Plans are currently underway to incorporate public art into this development. The proposed art work will reflect both the historic nature of the neighborhood and the cultural diversity of the community.
