6th Avenue Revitalization

The 6th Avenue corridor lies between the Des Moines River boundary to the north and Interstate 235 to the south.  As part of this revitalization plan, NDC began a three-phase development project in the “Wherry Block” located at 6th Avenue and College Avenue.  The Wherry Block provides a mix of businesses and four apartment units.  The first two phases of the development are complete and include:

Wherry Phase I – sited at the corner of 6th Avenue and College Avenue, Wherry I combines historic rehabilitation with new construction.  The corner building was constructed in 1887. NDC rehabilitated the building in 2005 and built a new addition in 2006.  The project provides commercial bays on the first floor and four apartment units on the second floor.

Wherry Phase II – this new commercial building was completed in the spring of 2008 and lies to the north of Wherry I. Wherry II offers four commercial bays with 1,140 square feet. Bays can be combined for a contiguous total of 4,560 square feet of retail space.
